The dynamics on the Elear are crazy good, so much sound just pops out at you. I think the measurements show a spike with some treble frequencies, but I haven't noticed anything personally. The Elear is much more detailed and clear sounding up top without being bright at all. The Elear's bass is worlds better then the 650, better textured, goes deeper, way more punchy sounding - no comparison. That's the only place the HD650 shines in the comparison. The Elear has a bit of a dip in the upper mids, lower treble, so the 650 has a bit smoother response across the mid/upper frequencies. The Elear is a step up from the 650 in ALMOST every way. HD650 has been my daily use headphone for the better part of five years, so I have a ton of experience with them. I just got my Elear this week, I also have the HD650 on hand to compare. What is the main difference to you on the elex that you prefer over the elear? with $300 difference, maybe Elex is a better choice with 2 year warranty, if the warranty process is not a hassle. I have seen new elear (not from authorized dealer) for as low as $400, but without the warranty, it's really a gamble. But seeing many people complain about driver failure on the elear, and also some people having issue with elex, makes me not wanting to pull the trigger. So I thought about if there is an upgrade headphone for the HD650, which is more detailed but also holding back on the treble, that's why I asked about the elear and elex because I saw some people refer it as HD650 upgrade. I only got shiit modi and jds atoms pair at the moment, as I heard they are not very warm dac/amp, so that may be part of the reason. The sharpness of Dt1990, even the He5se on the "teeth sound" on vocals and cymbal is very fatigue to listen and very piercing. To me personally, HD650 is a lot different than DT1990, the hold back on the treble is actually very suitable for me for listen to chinese pops. I mainly listen to classical and chinese pops, which for now, DT1990 is good for me for the classical due to the details and separations of the instruments. I really liked my HD650s with my tube amp: I find the Elex basically improves on everything tonality, imaging, soundstage, and durability-I think both it and the Elear have similar metal parts, but still are relatively light given the metal construction and doesn't have less clamping force than the HD650. It has some nice transparency, and doesn't have the suck out in the mids that I find Beyers have (IMO, that makes Beyers sound more sparkly and have more bass extension). I find I'm becoming more of a planar guy (LCD-2 fazors for my all in ones), but the Elex is now my favorite dynamics (maybe it's the metal drivers that do give it some better believably with cymbals). I find it has more extension than the HD650, better refinement, and some more slam. It's easier to drive (good if you do wind up listening to a portable without amp), but also does well with amplification. I do find my Elex a good upgrade over the 650. IMO, one potential advantage of perforated pads is some less stickiness/heat generation (but then with the Utopias, they're also a leather).Īgain, Focal says warranties are dependent on country and retailer: Crutchfield is an authorized retailer and lists the Elear for 1 year (though it's currently not being sold there). When it comes to pads in general.I think some people put more emphasis in them about sound differences.
